Suggestions for oatmeal dog shampoo?
I have 2 dogs and I'm using Advantix for fleas. I bathe one of them weekly, due to the fact she sleeps on the bed and well, I don't want doggy smell. lol The problem is even though she has Advantix on her, I was still seeing fleas. So, I called the company and they said I couldn't use any regular dog shampoo. What gets me is on the Advantix box, it says the product will stay on even after swimming or bathing. It doesn't specify you have have to use a mild shampoo. (don't believe everything you read)
I was hoping that someone would have a recipe for a homemade oatmeal shampoo. I'm afraid to buy something in the store, because the Advantix is too costly and I can't keep reapplying it every couple of weeks.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks!
After trial and error - this is the recipe that I've used for the last 10 years. It works really well!
Grab a gallon container that has a good seal ( I use a thoroughly rinsed out laundry detergent container or milk jug) and label it well to avoid any confusion:
Base:
12 oz or 1 1/2 Cups Dove, Ivory, or Dawn liquid soap - don't buy any of the antibacterial selections, just the basic soaps. Dawn is well known for killing fleas on your dog.
2 oz or 1/4 Cup liquid glycerine( Available at most pharmacies)
2 oz or 1/4 Cup apple cider vinegar
****Add optional additions below if desired****
Optional / mix-n-match Additions:
2 Tablespoons liquid vitamin E (also at most pharmacies) - great for your dogs coat
1 Cup Oatmeal - I usually run the oatmeal through the food processor, but you don't have to. It's the "milk" that the oatmeal makes with the water that is the important part. It all washes out either way.
essential oils of tea tree, peppermint or lavender - peppermint and lavender are found to be flea deterrents

Remember to fill the rest of the container with water and shake it to mix well every time you use it. Also, don't be fooled by its' liquidy nature. A little bit of this stuff goes a LONG way!

Oh, and on a side note. I have stopped using expensive flea products (pesticides) such as Advantix and Frontline. The solution that I have found works wonderfully and is all natural. Brewers Yeast tablets cost about $9.00 for 600 tablets. You give your pup 1 tablet per 10 lbs. every day. I haven't seen a flea yet this season. It takes the yeast a couple of weeks to get into their systems. I also treat my yard with DE (Diatomaceous Earth). I buy mine online. It is a little like flour made from fossil shells. Wow, does this stuff work well! It's all natural too, so it won't harm you or any of your critters. It costs me about $20 to treat my 1700 sq. ft. backyard. I've never had to use it twice. I also have cedar chips around the base of my fence so that the fleas from the neighbors yard don't hop on over for a good time. They don't like cedar at all.
