Why is my dvd/video recorder suddendly transmitting in black and white?

When I run the t.v throught it, it is black and white also when I play a dvd/video they are also black and white.It is a Samsung about 4 years old.

I would trouble shoot. Are all the connectors tight and secure? Do you get color on broadcast channels? Try new connectors, maybe you have a short!

Worse case is that the "chip" that encodes the color going out of the DVD player has a problem.

Does this happen with both composite and S-Video? The use different chips.

DVDs are encoded MP2 image files. VHS is color under heterodyne analog signal.

The player reads these two different signals and uses converters to send out either a composite (yellow, white and red connector) or S-Video (DIN style multipin round plug).

The YIQ elements from the MP2 DVDs are converted to YIQ/YUV phase shifted, two color elements. On S-Video these are sent out on one pin while the black and white (Y) signal is sent on a separate pin. In the case of composite all three are sent out together with the two colors 180 degrees out of phase. Once received by the TV set comb filters extract these to generate the color.

It is possible the TV set has problems. Check the DVD machine on another set.

If the DVD machine is monochrome on another set, you probably have a color circuit problem inside the DVD machine, time to buy a new one for $30 or with VHS for $60!

I've never actually heard of this problem, so I stick with "check the connections" and "check the cables" use new cables if you can.
